Personal Injury

Today, Gideon Asen, Maine’s Premier Plaintiff Trial Law Firm, named Attorney Meryl Poulin as a Partner.  Gideon Asen was founded in 2020 by Attorneys Benjamin Gideon and Taylor Asen.

Our decision to make Meryl a Partner reflects our conviction that Meryl has demonstrated the exceptional character, unwavering integrity, leadership within the firm, and consistent alignment with the firm’s core values

During more than four years at Gideon Asen, Attorney Poulin has distinguished herself through her work on complex, high-stakes medical malpractice, personal injury and wrongful death cases. She has played central roles in major litigation, applying disciplined preparation, clear strategic vision, strong command of the facts, and deep empathy for the clients she represents. Attorney Poulin was a key member of the trial teams in the Bischoff-Wurstle case, a case involving the negligence of a funeral company in mishandling family remains, which resulted in a $5.5 million verdict in 2022.  She was a key member of the trial team in the Julia Russell case, a sexual assault case, which resulted in a $4.5 million verdict in 2023. Most recently, Attorney Poulin was a key member of the trial team in the Sutherland case, a medical malpractice case involving the death of a fifteen-year old girl, which resulted in a landmark $25 million verdict, the highest medical malpractice and personal injury verdict in Maine history.

Meryl’s approach to clients is grounded in empathy and respect. She is known throughout the firm for her belief that every client must ‘feel seen, heard, and protected’ throughout the life of a case. This philosophy aligns directly with Gideon Asen’s mission of providing elite advocacy to individuals facing life-altering harm. Her ability to translate clients’ stories into compelling, fact-driven narratives is one of her greatest strengths as an advocate.

The firm’s partnership criteria emphasize not only courtroom skill but also character, judgment, collaboration, and internal leadership. Meryl consistently models these values. She approaches every challenge with humility and relentless curiosity, makes decisions based on evidence, not ego, and brings urgency and focus to every file she touches. Her colleagues consistently look to her for thoughtful insight, level-headed guidance, and a spirit of teamwork that elevates the entire firm.

Beyond her litigation work, Attorney Poulin maintains an active leadership role in the legal community. Her memberships include:

  • Board of Governors, Maine Trial Lawyers Association
  • Board of Directors, Maine Coalition Against Sexual Assault (MECASA)
  • Associate Fellow, Litigation Counsel of America
  • Member, Society of Women Trial Lawyers
  • Member, Maine State Bar Association
  • Member, American Association for Justice (AAJ)

Attorney Poulin has also served as an Adjunct Professor of Trial Advocacy at the University of Maine School of Law, mentoring emerging trial lawyers and supporting the next generation of advocates through coaching and judging moot-court competitions.

As Gideon Asen continues to grow across Maine, New Hampshire, and Vermont, the firm depends on leaders who uphold its culture of excellence and advance its mission of delivering exceptional advocacy to clients, Meryl’s partnership marks an important moment in that continued growth.
