Ask the Expert: How Do I Choose the Right Lawyer?

Choosing the right lawyer when you need one can be really overwhelming. So Ben Gideon with the Gideon Aisen Law Firm is here to us a little bit more about what we should be thinking about when we make that choice. Ben, thanks so much for joining us. Yeah. Some people say, what's the difference between lawyers? And I ask them, what would the difference in the New New England have been if they didn't have Belichick and Brady? The per people you choose to do the important jobs make an enormous difference, and there's no place where that's more evident than in the practice of law. The difference in the lawyer you choose is gonna have a huge impact on the difference in the outcome of your case. Well, let's talk specifically about some of those differences. What are the differences that can make a difference in that outcome? So I tell people to look for three things. One is the competency of the lawyer. That means do they have the skills in the area of the law that you need their help in? So for instance, for us, do medical malpractice, we do catastrophic injury, we do catastrophic workplace injury. If you need that skill set, we have that. Other lawyers don't. Secondly, look for what their reputation is among their peers in the community, and because that impacts how the judge will respond to them, how the fellow lawyers will respond to them, and that changes the outcome of the case. And the third thing I tell people is, do you like the person? Because you're gonna have to spend time with them. You need to have a good rapport and a relationship of trust. Well, then on the flip side, are there some red flags to also be watching out for? Never choose a lawyer based on a TV commercial only or on single ad campaign. Do your research. Get on their website. Look and see if they've written articles. Have they obtained verdicts? Have they gotten settlements? What are the client testimonials? It takes five or ten minutes, but it'll be well worth it. If a viewer is going to meet with an attorney for the first time, is there a question or maybe two that they should just have in their back pocket that they really need to ask? I mean, if you're going to a trial attorney because you have a case that might someday end up in court, ask them, have you ever been to court?
